Congratulations to Paul Sherrard, principal dentist at Moreton Dental Care, for reaching the final shortlist in a national dentistry competition.

Dr Sherrard has made it to the finals of the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards 2016.

His entries were among hundreds submitted by dentists from all over the country in a bid to win a prestigious prize.

Dr Sherrard has been shortlisted in the two categories he entered- both are for cases involving dental implants.

Competition organisers the dental publishing company FMC said: "Yet again the standard of this year's entries has been outstanding so to make it to this point is a major achievement in itself."

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in mid March.

Said Dr Sherrard: "I'm delighted to have got so far in the competition.  None of it would have been possible without the support of the wonderful team working with me at Moreton Dental Care."

Forward planning to improve your smile

A smile is worth a thousand words, so the saying goes.  It’s certainly more than just a contraction of muscles in your face!

Scientists have proved that smiling is also good for you. A smile can reduce stress and increase positive emotions which benefits physical and mental health.

We all know a person with a smile appears more confident, happier and relaxed, and sends out a more positive message to people they meet.

A smile usually involves showing your teeth, but if you’re not happy with the state of your teeth a trip to the dentist could really help to change that.

If you have a big event coming up but don’t feel happy about smiling at the camera, think about booking in for an appointment sooner rather than later.

We are frequently working to deadlines, but your new smile needs to last a lot longer than the big occasion so we don’t want to take short cuts with your treatment.

We’ve put together a timeline to give an idea of how long is required for a variety of treatments.  Why not contact our reception staff for more details and to book a consultation.  Phone on 0151 677 2917, or drop in to the practice to meet us.

Our experienced dental team are helping to create beautiful smiles for our patients every day, and we get great results, even described as life-changing by many.  Just have a look at reviews written by patients on our Facebook page!

Christmas Wishes

The Moreton Dental Care team would like to wish all our patients a very happy Christmas, and give an update on all the babies that have arrived this year.

This time last year six members of staff were due to be on maternity leave at the same time, which did happen.

Now all six babies- three girls and three boys- have been safely delivered and are looking forward to spending Christmas with their families.

Three of the mums, hygienist Stephanie Farrell and dental nurses Kerry Baily and Jennie Thorpe, are now back at work, while the remaining three, dental nurses Suzanne Roberts, Beckie Warren and Gemma Barnes, are expected to return in the New Year.

We managed to get all of them in together for a festive snap. From left to right: Gemma with Katie, Stephanie with Henry, Kerry with Oliver, Jennie with Evie, Suzanne with Rosie, and Beckie with Joey.

Principal dentist Dr Paul Sherrard says it has been a particularly memorable year for him. He added: “This is my 25th year running the practice, which is a milestone for me, but having six staff off at the same time is something I won’t forget either. Over the years I’ve had a few maternity leaves overlapping, but never anywhere near as many as this.”

He praised the rest of the staff for their hard work and flexibility to keep the practice running smoothly throughout the year, despite the staff shortage.  “Everyone has worked exceptionally hard for which I am extremely grateful. We particularly had to plan very carefully when people took their holidays in the summer. Now we’re all thrilled to see the new babies- they are gorgeous,” added Dr Sherrard.

Spare a thought for your teeth over the festive season.

Eat, drink, be merry and follow these top tips to help keep your mouth healthy this Christmas and all year round:

1. Brush before breakfast - You've got up at a ridiculous hour to squeeze the turkey into you oven. The children are still asleep so it's the perfect time to brush your teeth without interruption. Brushing before breakfast means that they teeth have not been exposed to any sugar or acid attacks and will help protect you for the day ahead.

2. Drink through a straw - Many of us are partial to a drink at Christmas, sugary or alcoholic drinks though can be extremely harmful to our teeth; causing tooth decay and erosion. Drinking through a straw can help bypass the teeth and you still get to enjoy your favourite festive tipple.

3. Chew sugar-free gum - After eating or drinking anything acidic it can take an hour for your mouth to return to its natural state. Chewing sugar-free gum encourages saliva production which helps this happen quicker, reducing acid attack on our teeth. It also means you have fresh breath when you get caught under the mistletoe for that cheeky kiss.

4. Wait an hour to brush - You have finished your ambitious sized Christmas dinner the Queen has appeared on your TV and you have fallen into a ‘food coma'. This is the perfect time to give your mouth a break. Brushing your teeth within an hour can brush away tiny particles of enamel, leading to eventual dental erosion. So wait until you wake up to give your teeth a brush and then get on with the celebrations.

5. Don't rinse, spit! - After you have brushed your teeth rinsing your mouth out with water can rinse away the protective fluoride from your toothpaste. Don't rinse, just spit to make sure you get the full benefit and bring a smile to your face this Christmas.

And a tip from Denplan: although a soft drink might seem like a healthier, non-alcoholic option this Christmas, many are highly acidic, or loaded with decay-causing sugar.  Why not try a refreshing iced water flavoured with slices of fresh cucumber and mint leaves for a tooth-friendly alternative.
