Olympic torch at Moreton Dental Care- thanks to grateful implant patient.

We’re getting into the Olympic spirit at Moreton Dental Care- thanks to dental implant patient Jack Blakemore.

Jack, 73, remembers how four years ago he was selected to carry the iconic Olympic Flame on a Merseyside leg of the torch relay leading up to the London Olympics.

Rather than let the impressive torch he carried sit in his loft at his Wallasey home he has offered to let us put it on view at the practice for the duration of this year’s games.

He made the offer after being so delighted with implant treatment carried out by MDC’s principal dentist Dr Paul Sherrard. Jack is pictured above with Dr Sherrard and was particularly proud of his new smile after having implant treatment to secure a new bridge.

Jack was selected by Wirral Council’s chief executive to be a torchbearer, thus joining a list of celebrities, including stars from the world of sport and entertainment, taking part in the relay. He took part in the Southport leg, cheered on by family, friends and crowds of well-wishers as he ran for 300m carrying the torch along Scarisbrick Road on June 1, 2012.

The retired local authority pastoral care officer is very modest but a quick search on Google revealed he has received quite a few awards for his good deeds- among them a long service medal from the Football Association for services to refereeing, and a Civic Award from Wirral Council in 2001 for his services to the community.

We’re delighted Jack has lent us the torch which is now part of our 2016 Olympics display at reception.

We’re also thrilled Jack is pleased with his dental treatment. Jack says he loves visiting Moreton Dental Care. “I’m sure not everyone says they feel relaxed in the dentist’s chair, but when you know you are in the hands of a true professional I feel very relaxed,” he said.

Forward planning to improve your smile

A smile is worth a thousand words, so the saying goes.  It’s certainly more than just a contraction of muscles in your face!

Scientists have proved that smiling is also good for you. A smile can reduce stress and increase positive emotions which benefits physical and mental health.

We all know a person with a smile appears more confident, happier and relaxed, and sends out a more positive message to people they meet.

A smile usually involves showing your teeth, but if you’re not happy with the state of your teeth a trip to the dentist could really help to change that.

If you have a big event coming up but don’t feel happy about smiling at the camera, think about booking in for an appointment sooner rather than later.

We are frequently working to deadlines, but your new smile needs to last a lot longer than the big occasion so we don’t want to take short cuts with your treatment.

We’ve put together a timeline to give an idea of how long is required for a variety of treatments.  Why not contact our reception staff for more details and to book a consultation.  Phone on 0151 677 2917, or drop in to the practice to meet us.

Our experienced dental team are helping to create beautiful smiles for our patients every day, and we get great results, even described as life-changing by many.  Just have a look at reviews written by patients on our Facebook page!

Young-at-heart Gordon delights in his new smile

Even at the age of 88 Gordon Mumford decided dentures were not for him.

When a bridge failed after 25 years he decided to take advantage of the latest dental technology- dental implants.

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done with my money. The whole process has been absolutely wonderful, “ said the sprightly pensioner after having two dental implants fitted to secure a three-unit bridge.

Now Gordon is smiling from ear to ear, thanks to the new teeth which have restored his confidence.

He described the implant treatment as ‘painless’ from start to finish and praised staff for their support.

“Everyone here is lovely. I’m really looked after like one of the family,” said Gordon who has been a patient of the practice for 30 years.

Said Dr Sherrard: “It’s always a real joy to treat Gordon. He’s a true gentleman, always cheerful and very appreciative., and the staff all love him.”

A new dimension at Moreton Dental Care

It’s all smiles at Moreton Dental Care today- not only is it the start of National Smile Month, but also the day the practice has moved into a new dimension!

We have just had the latest in X-ray technology installed- a dental cone beam CT scanner (CBCT) - which enables us to produce highly accurate 3-D images of patients’ jaws and teeth.

MDC is one of the first practices in the area to have its own CBCT scanner and is a big step forward because its scans will provide much more information than conventional 2-D X-rays usually taken in dental practices.

It is of particular benefit for patients considering dental implants or other special procedures such as root canal treatment, because it enables our dental team to assess the exact shape of the bone.

The new machine is causing great excitement among staff and the first patients to be scanned.   They are marvelling at the clarity of the images produced from one low dose scan.

Dental radiographer Emma Eccles who has been training MDC staff how to use the scanner today, said: “The 3-D image always completely wows the patient.”

Practice principal Paul Sherrard says he will find 3-D imaging invaluable when planning dental implant cases.  Previously patients whose jaw bones needed examining in 3-D have have had to travel to Liverpool for a CT scan.

“The images are of fantastic quality and will be very helpful to diagnose difficult problems,’ said Dr Sherrard.

The images obtained by CT scanning will not only show the quality and quantity of a patient’s bone, but also most importantly the presence of anatomical structures that must be avoided.
