Mouth Cancer Awareness month, November 2015

Staff at Moreton Dental Care are wearing their blue lips with pride this November in support of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Staff have found if they all put on their blue lipstick at the same time, patients start to question why they are wearing it.

The answer is they are aiming to raise awareness of MOUTH CANCER- a disease which claims around 2,000 lives each year. Many of these could be prevented if the cancer is caught early enough.

The campaign organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, aims to increase public awareness of the risk factors, signs and symptoms, and to encourage everybody to visit their dentist regularly to help spot the disease early.

Dentists at Moreton Dental Care routinely check for mouth cancer at every general appointment. Early detection transforms survival rates from 50% to 90% which highlights the importance of the campaign.

The BDHF is hoping Mouth Cancer Action Month will send a clear message to the public with its campaign phrase “If in doubt get it checked out”.

Mouth cancer can strike in a number of places including the lips, tongue, gums and cheek. Three signs and symptoms not to ignore are:

.ulcers which do not heal in three weeks,

.red and white patches in the mouth,

.unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area.
