Uganda 2015 update

Almost 1,000 patients received care from dentist Dr Paul Sherrard on his two-week charity trip to rural East Africa this summer.

He was with a medical team from the UK who joined up with Ugandan health workers to visit remote Ugandan villages where they provided health care for poverty-stricken subsistence farmers and their families.

The whole team were able to offer help to around 4,000 people who would not normally have access to medical or dental care but have a high treatment need.

Paul extracted hundreds of teeth to relieve the toothache of many Ugandans and also gave oral hygiene instruction to local schoolchildren.  The mission team handed out 1,800 toothbrushes after giving lessons in how to use a toothbrush most effectively.

The trip was organised by the Rock of Joy Trust which was established to support schools and communities in Uganda after initial visits from Heswall medics and churchgoers back in 2007.

Since then volunteers from the UK have returned annually to work towards their goals of establishing clean water supplies, building new schools, sponsoring teachers and attending to the medical needs of the community.

The volunteers on this trip included 30 teenagers from Heswall Youth Fellowship, some of whom assisted the medics, while the rest ran fun clubs, sports sessions and lessons in the four Christian schools supported by the trust. The youngsters spent a year training and preparing before setting off for Uganda in July.

Paul says he was privileged to be part of the trip and felt humbled by the team spirit and sincere kindness shown by the Ugandan people he met.
