Uganda Charity Trip

These are some of the latest photographs sent by our principal dentist Dr Paul Sherrard from his charity trip to East Africa where he is spending two weeks helping meet a desperate need for dentistry.

He is treating hundreds of tooth ache sufferers, many of whom will have not seen a dentist before in their isolated communities in Uganda.

This week he is south of the equator near Masaka working with a team of British and local doctors and nurses, setting up temporary clinics in remote and impoverished villages

Dr Sherrard is extremely grateful for the huge support he has received from his patients at Moreton Dental Care and other well-wishers who donated more than £2,000 to help fund the trip which has been organised through the Parish of Heswall Churches.

It is the third time he has worked in Uganda. On each of the previous trips he extracted more than 1,000 teeth. The tooth-decay was so bad in some patients they were suffering from life-threatening infections.

A team of 27 teenagers from Heswall Youth Fellowship are also on the Uganda mission. They are spending time working in schools, running holiday clubs and offering support in the local communities, as well as helping to spread the message about good oral hygiene.

Said Dr Sherrard: “It’s a huge privilege to have the opportunity to take part in this mission, and I’m very touched by all the support I have received from so many people.”

The trip is organised by the Rock of Joy Trust which was established to support schools and communities in Uganda after initial visits from Heswall medics and churchgoers back in 2007.

Since then volunteers from the UK have been back annually to work towards their goals of establishing clean water supplies, building new schools, sponsoring teachers and attending to the medical needs of the community.
