Dr Sherrard has been on two charity missions to Uganda in the past few years. On both trips he was able to help relieve the tooth ache of hundreds of poverty-stricken local people. Many patients have kindly made generous donations to support his charity work, for which he is extremely grateful.
This is a report of his first trip.
Dental Mission to Uganda
We would like to thank everyone who has generously supported us in our successful mission to help hundreds of Ugandans suffering with dental pain.
The backing of our local community enabled Moreton Dental Care principal Dr Paul Sherrard and dental nurse Laura Hill to travel to remote African villages where they extracted more than 1,000 teeth, relieving hundreds of local people of their toothache.
Paul and Laura went on a two-week medical mission to Uganda, visiting villages where locals had never seen white people before, never mind a dentist.
The medical team travelled for up to four hours by minibus each day along rough roads and mud tracks to reach the remote communities on sugar plantations in central Uganda to offer their greatly needed services.
Villagers were happy to queue for hours to be seen in the makeshift clinics. Paul and Laura provided treatment, with the help of an interpreter, in whatever accommodation villagers could provide, working with no electricity or running water.
One clinic was conducted in the open under the shade of a tarpaulin slung up on tree branches.
Said Paul: 'The mission was a hugely worthwhile experience. I have never seen such poverty and poor living conditions, and yet we saw so many happy, smiling faces and were able to help a lot of people in a short space of time. We were mostly extracting teeth as the people had such bad decay and had often not seen a dentist before.'
'We are extremely grateful for the fantastic support we received from patients and colleagues,' he said.
Many of our patients generously sponsored MDC staff on a fund-raising hike up Mt. Snowdon, while colleagues at many Wirral dental practices donated equipment for the trip.
