“If in doubt, check it out” is the message of Mouth Cancer Action campaigners aiming to raise awareness of the disease which sees more than 8,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the UK.
At Moreton Dental Care we are supporting the Blue Ribbon Appeal by selling blue ribbon badges (just £1 each) this month- Mouth Cancer Action Month.
The appeal wants to spread the word about mouth cancer and severely reduce the number of lives lost to the disease every year.
The number of cases has risen by 49% in the past 10 years. Spotting it early leads to a much better chance of beating it- the survival rate is nine out of ten with early diagnosis.
Sadly, far too many mouth cancers are still not spotted early enough.
During Mouth Cancer Action Month we are encouraging everybody to be “mouthaware” and pay close attention to what’s going on inside the mouth.
Most importantly, if you notice anything out of the ordinary, it is essential that you tell your dentist or doctor immediately. Our dentists are looking for signs of mouth cancer at every check-up.
What you should be looking for:
.mouth ulcers that don’t heal within three weeks,
.red or white patches in the mouth, unusual lumps or swelling in the mouth head or neck.
Look at your cheeks, gums, lips, tongue and tonsils.
Also check the roof of your mouth, as well as your head and neck.
Over the past 12 months, money raised through the Blue Ribbon Appeal has helped to directly support to more than 350,000 people online, over the phone, by email and by printed information, who sought advice about mouth cancer.
